PESHAWAR, Dec 21: Sixteen soldiers lost their lives and eight others sustained injuries when terrorists launched an attack on a security checkpoint in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province of northwest Pakistan early Saturday, according to security sources.
The assault targeted the Lita Sar checkpoint in Makeen, located in the South Waziristan district, which borders Afghanistan, sources reported.
This incident marks one of the most significant attacks on security forces in recent months.
This attack follows the elimination of two terrorists by Pakistani security forces in an intelligence-led operation in the Sararogha area of the same district just days prior.
Law enforcement officials acted on intelligence regarding the presence of militants in the area, resulting in the death of two terrorists while two others were apprehended during an operation in the first week of December.
South Waziristan is one of seven semi-autonomous tribal regions where the Army has been engaged in combat against militants associated with banned organizations for over a decade. (PTI)
