NEW DELHI, Jan 8: A Delhi court is expected to announce its verdict on January 21 regarding a murder case from the 1984 anti-Sikh riots involving former Congress MP Sajjan Kumar.
This case pertains to the alleged murders of two individuals in the Saraswati Vihar area during the riots.
Special Judge Kaveri Baweja, who was set to deliver the ruling on Wednesday, postponed the announcement.
“The next date is January 21,” the judge stated.
Kumar, currently imprisoned in Tihar Central Jail, appeared in court via videoconference.
The judgment had been reserved following the conclusion of final arguments in the case related to the killings of Jaswant Singh and his son Tarundeep Singh on November 1, 1984.
Initially registered at the Punjabi Bagh police station, the case was later taken over by a special investigation team.
On December 16, 2021, charges were framed against Kumar after the court determined there was a “prima facie” case against him.
The prosecution alleges that a large mob, armed with dangerous weapons, engaged in extensive looting, arson, and destruction of Sikh properties in retaliation for the assassination of former Prime Minister Indira Gandhi.
During the attack on the home of the complainant, Jaswant Singh’s wife, both her husband and their son were killed, alongside the theft of their belongings and the burning of their home, according to the prosecution.
In putting Kumar on trial, the court found enough evidence to suggest that he was not only involved but had also led the mob. (Agencies)
