New Delhi, January 7: The Supreme Court granted interim bail on Tuesday to self-proclaimed godman Asaram in connection with a 2013 rape case on medical grounds, effective until March 31.
Importantly, a bench consisting of Justices M M Sundresh and Rajesh Bindal instructed Asaram to avoid meeting his followers after his release.
The court noted that the 86-year-old Asaram was dealing with several age-related health issues, including a heart condition.
Previously, the Supreme Court had requested a response from the Gujarat government regarding Asaram’s plea for suspension of the life sentence handed down to him by a Gandhinagar court in 2023.
The Supreme Court mentioned it would focus solely on the medical aspects of the case.
On August 29, 2024, the Gujarat High Court denied Asaram’s request to suspend his sentence, stating there was insufficient grounds for granting him relief.
In January 2023, a trial court convicted Asaram based on a case filed by a woman who resided in his ashram in Gandhinagar at the time of the alleged incident.
Asaram is currently incarcerated in a Jodhpur jail in Rajasthan for another rape case. (Agencies)
