24 Injured in Violent Clashes Between Security Forces and Protesters Against Cable Car Project in Eastern Nepal

KATHMANDU, Feb 23: Clashes erupted on Saturday in the Pathibhara region of Taplejung district, resulting in injuries to at least 24 individuals, including 12 security personnel. The unrest was incited by protesters opposing a cable car project, which they fear will undermine the area’s historical significance.
The ‘No Cable Car’ faction has been vocal in their resistance to the proposed cable car development. According to officials, the violent confrontations occurred in Phungling as tensions escalated between the demonstrators and security forces.
Following the altercations, police detained 15 individuals involved in the violence.
To restore order, Taplejung district authorities imposed a prohibitory order in several areas, including Phungling Bazaar and Pathibhara, starting Sunday morning. This restriction prohibits gatherings of more than five people, as well as demonstrations and other public events in the designated zones.
Chief District Officer of Taplejung, Netra Prasad Sharma, announced the prohibition late Saturday night, emphasizing its necessity to maintain law and order.
The decision to enforce this order was prompted by the escalating violence seen during clashes between ‘No Cable Car’ protestors and police earlier in the week.
In the House of Representatives, opposition lawmakers, including Rajendra Lingden of the Rastriya Prajatantra Party and Toshima Karki of the Rastriya Swotantra Party, called on the government to suspend cable car construction, citing widespread local opposition to the project. (PTI)
