New Delhi, Jan 3: The proportion of girl cadets in the NCC has increased to 40 percent, with a step-by-step expansion plan slated for the Corps in the coming years, senior officials announced on Friday.
During a press conference, Director General of the National Cadet Corps, Lt Gen Gurbirpal Singh, provided insights into the current NCC Republic Day Camp taking place at Delhi Cantonment and outlined the Corps’ future roadmap.
Currently, 2,361 NCC cadets from across India are participating in a month-long Republic Day camp that commenced on December 30. This year, the event boasts the highest participation yet, with 917 girl cadets joining in.
Among the total 2,361 cadets, 114 hail from Jammu & Kashmir and Ladakh, while 178 come from the northeastern region.
The DG, NCC informed reporters that cadets from over 15 friendly foreign nations are also expected to participate in the camp.
“We kicked off the event with a Sarva Dharma Pooja, seeking well-being for all… Additionally, we have introduced a new category of competition focused on ideas and innovation this year,” he stated.
When questioned about expansion plans and the representation of girl cadets within the NCC, he indicated that the sanctioned strength of the Corps stands at 20 lakh, with the current number being 17 lakh.
He emphasized that girl cadets currently make up 40 percent of the total strength.
A senior official mentioned, during the press interaction, that the number of girl cadets has increased significantly over the past decade, and there’s a planned phase-wise expansion for the NCC.
The Republic Day Camp is fundamentally aimed at fostering patriotism, discipline, and leadership skills among the participating cadets.
This annual event provides cadets with invaluable training opportunities, encourages engagement in cultural initiatives, and promotes social service efforts, ultimately nurturing unity and pride, according to officials. (PTI)
