Kathmandu, January 7: A powerful earthquake shook Kathmandu early Tuesday morning (January 7, 2025). The tremor, measuring 7.1 on the Richter scale, was detected by the National Earthquake Measurement Centre at 6:50 a.m. Tremors were also felt in Madhubani, Bihar.
The epicenter was located in Dinggye, China, as reported by the center.
Residents in the neighboring Kavrepalanchowk and Dhading districts also experienced the quake. Many people ran out of their homes in panic throughout Kathmandu.
Fortunately, there are currently no reports of significant damage.
Regions around Lobuche in the high mountains near Mount Everest were also affected, experiencing the shaking and subsequent aftershocks.
“It shook quite strongly here; everyone is awake, but we are still unaware of any damages,” stated government official Jagat Prasad Bhusal from Nepal’s Namche area, close to Everest.
In related news, a magnitude 6.8 earthquake struck near one of Tibet’s sacred cities on the same morning, causing damage in Shigatse and prompting residents of neighboring Nepal and India to flee to the streets.
The quake, occurring at 9:05 a.m. (01:05 GMT), had a depth of 10 km (6.2 miles), with the magnitude revised from an earlier estimate of 6.9.
Footage from the nearby town of Lhatse showed collapsed shop fronts and debris scattered onto the streets.
Reuters managed to confirm the location using nearby buildings, window layouts, and street signage consistent with satellite imagery. Verification of the date remains pending. (Agencies)
