Suresh Anuragi, along with two others, was arrested on February 4 and charged under FIR number 344/2024 at Police Station Bahu Fort for allegedly stealing household items such as a refrigerator, LED TV, and gas cylinder, according to a police official.
During his detention at PS Bahu Fort, he underwent regular medical assessments, with health check-ups performed five times following standard operating procedures (SOP).
On the day of the incident, while still in police custody, Anuragi reported severe chest and abdominal pain.
The police acted swiftly, transporting him to the District Police Hospital and notifying his family.
He was subsequently referred to GMC Jammu for advanced treatment around 4 PM. Sadly, he collapsed during treatment at approximately 9:30 PM, as confirmed by the police official.
The deceased’s family was present at the hospital during his treatment. Additionally, it was noted that Anuragi had a history of drug addiction and had received treatment at a de-addiction center in the past.
The DPO Jammu has requested a magistrate inquiry, and the National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) has been informed as per legal requirements, the official added.
A post-mortem examination has also been ordered by a medical board. Meanwhile, the Jammu and Kashmir Police have guaranteed that a thorough investigation will be conducted.
