JAMMU, Jan 12: The Union Ministry of Home Affairs has reassigned Vijay Kumar, an IPS officer from the 1997 batch, from his position as Additional Director General of Police (ADGP) for Law and Order in J&K Police to the Delhi segment of the AGMUT cadre. This move has fueled speculation that he may take on the role of Special Commissioner in the Delhi Police.
“With the approval of the competent authority, Vijay Kumar, IPS (AGMUT: 1997) is hereby transferred from Jammu and Kashmir to the Delhi segment of AGMUT cadre with immediate effect or until further orders,” the Ministry of Home Affairs stated in an official order.
Sources confirm that Kumar has been instrumental in combating terrorism during his tenure as IG and ADGP in Kashmir.
He possesses extensive experience in conducting anti-terrorism operations in sensitive areas such as Pulwama, Awantipora, Kulgam, and Anantnag. His service record showcases a distinctive blend of skills in anti-terrorist, anti-Maoist, and law-and-order operations, both within Jammu and Kashmir and beyond.
Hailing from the Saharsa district in Bihar, Kumar holds a Master’s degree from Jawaharlal Nehru University, New Delhi.
Notably, he is the only IPS officer from the former J&K cadre who has served in the Special Operations Group (SOG), the counter-terrorism division of J&K Police, in the southern region of Kashmir.
In 2023, he was awarded the President’s Police Medal for distinguished services on Republic Day.
Kumar is also recognized for his leadership in anti-terror operations in Kashmir, anti-Maoist endeavors in Bastar, Chhattisgarh, and his involvement during the Jat agitation.
He has received three gallantry medals from the central government for his contributions to anti-terrorism efforts, in addition to a gallantry award from the J&K Government.
Furthermore, the Election Commission of India honored Kumar with the National Award for his role as Chief Force Coordinator of CAPFs, ensuring a secure environment for the Assembly elections in nine states in 2018.
