Lucknow, Dec 26: On Thursday, Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath celebrated the rich heritage of the Sikh community, emphasizing their resilience in challenging circumstances. He commended the Sikhs for preserving their traditions and inspiring others through their sacrifices for both the nation and their faith.
Speaking at the Veer Bal Diwas (Sahibzada Diwas) event at his residence, he noted, “The Sikh community has a remarkable history, yet reports indicate that only a few Sikh families remain in Kabul. Instances in Bangladesh and the challenges faced in Pakistan remind us of the sacrifices made by the Sikh Gurus.” He continued, “The teachings of the Sikh Gurus energize our progress and serve as our inspiration. By honoring their legacy, we can avoid situations like those in Kabul and Bangladesh, and places like Nankana Sahib will naturally come to us without the need for turmoil.”
The event featured a large gathering and the initiation of 11,000 ‘sahaj paaths’. Additionally, the chief minister unveiled a book dedicated to the teachings of Guru Teg Bahadur.
Chief Minister Adityanath described the Sikh community as a resilient and thriving part of the nation, setting high standards through their strength, dedication, and hard work. “Historically, Sikhs have significantly contributed to India’s defense by joining the Army. However, there are elements trying to undermine their efforts by luring the youth into drug abuse,” he remarked.
He stressed the importance of recognizing such threats, stating, “Sikhs and Hindus complement each other. We must reject those who aim to divide us. May Guru Maharaj grant us the wisdom to identify our true friends and foes,” highlighting the importance of unity.
Reflecting on previous occurrences, he recalled that in 2019, a ‘shabad-kirtan’ program was held at his residence during the 550th Prakash Parv of Guru Nanak Dev. Since 2020, the annual observance of Veer Bal Diwas has become a tradition at his residence.
“Today, this event has evolved into a national commemoration. On this day, the two sons of Guru Gobind Singh — Baba Zorawar Singh and Fateh Singh — were walled up alive by Wazir Khan,” he added.
The chief minister also recounted the heroic sacrifices made in the Battle of Chamkaur, where Guru Gobind Singh’s elder sons, Baba Ajit Singh and Baba Jujhar Singh, achieved martyrdom.
“Maa Gujri endured unimaginable pain due to these losses. Yet, the commitment to protect the country and their faith remained unwavering. By giving their lives, the four Sahibzaades established a strong foundation for safeguarding the nation and its values. Their valor is a source of pride for both the Sikh community and the entire nation,” he stated.
Highlighting Sikhism’s origins in service to the nation, Adityanath noted, “Guru Nanak Dev was the first to resist Babar’s tyranny. Guru Arjun Dev laid down his life in Lahore to protect India from Jahangir’s oppression.
“Guru Teg Bahadur sacrificed his life to preserve India’s honor, ensuring Kashmir remained part of India. Guru Gobind Singh witnessed the ultimate sacrifice of his sons and father for the nation,” he added.
This year marks the 350th martyrdom anniversary of Guru Teg Bahadur. Reflecting on Lucknow’s historical significance, he noted, “Lucknow is fortunate as Guru Teg Bahadur ji visited here with Guru Gobind Singh ji. To honor this heritage, we should devise a comprehensive plan to beautify associated gurudwaras in collaboration with the municipal corporation.” He promised state government financial support and called for coordinated efforts, saying, “We must not shift responsibilities. The state government, municipal corporation, and development authority must collaborate to rehabilitate shopkeepers by constructing high-rise buildings or malls on their land. Gurudwaras linked to this historical legacy should be aesthetically enhanced.” (PTI)
