NEW DELHI, Feb 9: The 15th edition of ‘Aero India’, recognized as Asia’s largest air show, is set to kick off in Bengaluru on February 10. Defence Minister Rajnath Singh highlighted on Sunday that this event serves as a platform to demonstrate the “strength, resilience, and self-reliance” of a new India.
Spanning over 42,000 sq m and featuring participation from more than 900 exhibitors, including 150 international companies, this edition is poised to be the largest ‘Aero India’ to date.
Upon his arrival in Bengaluru, Singh noted that the attendance of over 90 countries underscores the growing global confidence in India’s aerospace and defence capabilities, as stated by the Defence Ministry.
The Union minister expressed optimism that the defence production, which has reached a record high of Rs 1.27 lakh crore, will surpass Rs 1.60 lakh crore by the end of the 2025-26 fiscal year.
Defence exports, which hit a record of Rs 21,000 crore, are expected to exceed Rs 30,000 crore, as per the statement.
‘Aero India’ is a biennial air show and aviation exhibition hosted in Bengaluru by the Defence Exhibition Organization under the Department of Defence Production, Ministry of Defence.
This event is India’s foremost aerospace and defence exhibition where global aero vendors and the Indian Air Force (IAF) delight the audience with spectacular aerobatic flying displays.
The minister described ‘Aero India’ as a vital contributor to economic strength, aiding the overall growth and progress of the economy. He believes that ‘Aero India’ will be remembered as a “historic milestone in India’s journey” towards becoming a global leader in the aerospace and defence arena.
Earlier, Singh posted on X that he looks forward to attending the 15th edition of ‘Aero India’ in Bengaluru, which will showcase advanced defence technologies and international aviation excellence.
Asia’s largest air show will take place at the Air Force Station, Yelahanka, in the southern city.
For the first time, ‘Aero India’ will feature two of the most advanced fifth-generation fighter aircraft — the Russian Su-57 and the American F-35 Lightning II, according to the statement.
Later, Singh informed reporters in Bengaluru that ‘Aero India’ is an essential platform that supports the government’s vision of a “strong, capable, secure, and self-reliant India,” as reiterated by the ministry.
The central theme of this edition is ‘The Runway to a Billion Opportunities’.
“Aero India showcases the strength, resilience, and self-reliance of new India. It is essential not only for India’s defence preparedness but also plays a key role in shaping our nation’s future,” Singh stated.
It will exhibit India’s defence capabilities and foster global partnerships, he added.
Defence ministers or representatives from approximately “30 countries” are participating in the event.
The attendance of air chiefs and secretaries from 43 countries further emphasizes the significance of this event – not just for India but for the entire global defence community, as Singh pointed out.
“Our aim is to enhance collaboration in shared areas of interest with our friendly nations, promoting deeper cooperation and mutual progress. The event is not just about technology and innovation; it is also a source of inspiration for our youth, fostering a scientific mindset and a spirit of innovation,” he added.
The Department of Defence Production provided an update on its X handle about the event scheduled from February 10-14.
In a post on X on Sunday, the department announced that the defence minister will also inaugurate the ‘India Pavilion’ at Aero India 2025 on February 10.
On the eve of the mega event’s inauguration, IAF Chief Air Chief Marshal A P Singh and Army Chief Gen Upendra Dwivedi flew a sortie together in a Light Combat Aircraft (LCA) Tejas from the Air Force Station, Yelahanka.
As a flagship event, ‘Aero India’ gathers global industry leaders, government officials, technology experts, and defence strategists in one location, according to officials.
“Aero India is a testament to India’s steadfast commitment to innovation, strategic collaboration, and excellence in aerospace and defence,” said the ministry before the event.
The event aims to build on the rich legacy of previous editions, notably Aero India 2023.
“With rigorous operational protocols, strategic partnerships, and a visionary agenda, Aero India 2025 is set to elevate India’s profile on the global aerospace stage,” the ministry mentioned.
Highlighting the recent transformations in the defence and aerospace sector, Singh emphasized that India can now design and develop significant platforms and equipment domestically and has established a comprehensive supply chain within the country.
“Advanced platforms such as the Light Combat Aircraft Tejas, Light Combat Helicopter Prachand, and C295 transport aircraft are now being produced in India. We are also committed to manufacturing fifth-generation fighter aircraft domestically. From advanced variants of the Agni missile, the Astra missile system, and the Pinaka missile system to cutting-edge hypersonic missile systems and the Akash air defence system, we have built several success stories,” he noted.
“These accomplishments are crucial for strengthening our defence sector, enhancing India’s self-reliance and security,” the Union minister asserted.
Singh also mentioned that following the corporatization of the Ordnance Factory Board, the newly established companies are performing “exceptionally well” in defence production.
“With a comprehensive and well-conceived plan, we are actively working to empower the private sector in the defence and aerospace industries. Today, India boasts a vibrant private defence industry that is making significant contributions to our national security,” he stated.
Singh highlighted the vital role of the defence industrial sector in positioning India as an economic superpower, indicating that advancements in defence not only bolster national security but also positively influence the economy.
Technologies developed for defence purposes also drive innovation in the civilian sector, leading to job creation and economic growth, he remarked.
February 10 to February 12 are designated as business days for the five-day mega event, while February 13 and February 14 are set as public days for attendees to enjoy the show.
The event will consist of a Defence Ministers’ Conclave, a CEOs Roundtable, the inauguration of the India and iDEX pavilions, the Manthan iDEX event, the Samarthya indigenisation event, seminars, thrilling air shows, and an exhibition featuring numerous aerospace companies. (PTI)
