Srinagar, Feb 11: The All Jammu and Kashmir Panchayat Conference (AJKPC) has urged Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Union Home Minister Amit Shah to expedite the panchayat elections in the Union Territory.
“The ongoing delay in these elections represents not only a constitutional failure but also a disregard for the democratic wishes of the people in Jammu and Kashmir. Rural development has stalled, leading to a growing sense of alienation from governance among the citizens,” stated AJKPC president Anil Sharma.
Sharma emphasized that he has made a pressing appeal to Prime Minister Modi, Home Minister Shah, Lieutenant Governor Manoj Sinha, and Chief Minister Omar Abdullah, insisting on the immediate organization of panchayat elections.
“It is essential for the government to take swift action to reinstate grassroots democracy and ensure that Panchayati Raj institutions operate effectively. A prompt election notification must be issued to facilitate free and fair elections, thereby bringing governance closer to the people,” he highlighted.
Sharma raised concerns regarding the lack of elected panchayats for over a year since their dissolution on January 9, 2024.
“This extended gap has significantly hampered rural governance, delayed development projects, and obstructed the proper execution of welfare schemes across Jammu and Kashmir,” he concluded. (Agencies)
