JAMMU, Dec 15: In the ongoing discussion about the illegal settlement of Rohingyas in Jammu and Kashmir, especially within the Jammu region, Union Home Minister Amit Shah accused the West Bengal and Jharkhand Governments of enabling the infiltration of Rohingyas and Bangladeshis for “political motives.”

“We have secured 96 percent of the border with Bangladesh (the entry point for Rohingyas into India and further into various States/Union Territories, including Jammu and Kashmir). Only four percent remains unfenced due to rivers, streams, large ponds, dense forests, and mountainous terrain,” Shah stated in an interview with a national Hindi news channel.
He noted that infiltration (by Bangladeshis and Rohingyas) has ceased in Assam and is expected to end in Odisha. However, it continues in West Bengal and Jharkhand, as the Governments there view these migrants as a vote bank.
Assam is currently under BJP governance, while the party assumed power in Odisha in June this year. In contrast, West Bengal and Jharkhand are led by the Trinamool Congress and JMM, both of which are opposition parties.
“The Home Ministry has identified villages that are sources of infiltration and has instructed local Police Stations, Patwaris, and Collectors to be vigilant and investigate when individuals seek ration, Aadhaar, and voter cards,” the Home Minister stated.
“Isn’t it their duty to monitor infiltration? Isn’t this their country, their State? What are the local authorities doing? They assert that Hindus shouldn’t come. They refuse to implement the CAA while permitting illegal immigrants to intrude,” he emphasized.
The illegal settlement of Rohingyas in the Jammu region has ignited intense discussions, with police issuing orders to cut off power and water to the areas occupied by Rohingyas and filing First Information Reports (FIRs) against those who sublet their properties to these illegal immigrants.
Initially, the Myanmarese enter Bangladesh without restriction and subsequently cross into India through borders of various States. With the help of middlemen, Bangladeshis and Myanmarese then infiltrate different States/UTs and establish residence there.
Law enforcement and security agencies express concerns that Rohingyas may pose a security threat as their presence is not limited to Jammu but has also expanded to other districts, where girls are marrying local men to facilitate long-term stay.
Four NGOs based in Kashmir have been implicated in providing assistance to Rohingyas in both financial and material forms.
Authorities discovered that 61 Aadhaar cards were issued to Rohingyas in the Jammu region and 97 in the Kashmir division, while eight Rohingyas have successfully obtained ration cards.
“Reports indicate that Rohingya girls are being illegally trafficked from Myanmar to Jammu and Kashmir for arranged marriages with locals for financial gain,” officials have reported.
Highlighting that Rohingyas are often employed as cheap labor, with lower wages than locals in critical areas such as Railways, officials noted that their presence in sensitive locations could evolve into a security concern. Nevertheless, security agencies are maintaining strict oversight of the Rohingyas.
As previously reported by the Excelsior, the police have initiated a significant crackdown on Rohingyas in various parts of the City, filing numerous FIRs against landlords who have rented properties to Myanmarese without conducting mandatory tenant verification.
