New Delhi, Feb 17: On Tuesday, Union Home Minister Amit Shah is set to review the progress of implementing the new criminal laws in Jammu and Kashmir. The meeting will be attended by Chief Minister Omar Abdullah and Lieutenant Governor Manoj Sinha, according to sources.
Despite law and order now being managed directly by the central government following the bifurcation of the region into the Union Territories of Jammu and Kashmir and Ladakh, Abdullah has been invited to participate in the review.
The meeting, taking place at North Block, will also include senior officials from both the central and Jammu and Kashmir governments.
The newly enacted laws—the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, the Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita, and the Bharatiya Sakshya Adhiniyam—replace the colonial-era Indian Penal Code, Code of Criminal Procedure, and the Indian Evidence Act of 1872. These new legislations came into force on July 1 of the previous year.
Shah has previously conducted reviews on the status of these laws in various states, including Uttar Pradesh, Haryana, Uttarakhand, Madhya Pradesh, and Gujarat.
