JAMMU, Dec 16: The Northern Command of the Army conducted wreath-laying ceremonies across Jammu and Kashmir, as well as Ladakh, to honor Vijay Diwas. This occasion commemorates India’s victory over Pakistan in the 1971 war, which resulted in the creation of Bangladesh as an independent nation. The Udhampur-based Northern Command held a wreath-laying event at the Dhruva War Memorial, led by General Officer Commanding-in-Chief, Lt Gen M V Suchindra Kumar.
During the ceremony, Lt Gen Kumar engaged with veterans, emphasizing their enduring legacy of bravery and dedication, as noted in a Northern Command post on X. Similarly, the Jammu-based Tiger Division marked the day at the ‘Balidan Stambh’, a local war memorial.
This event is dedicated to honoring the ultimate sacrifices made by valiant soldiers during the India-Pakistan war in 1971, in which Indian forces achieved victory over the Pakistani Army in merely 13 days, culminating in the end of the conflict on December 16, 1971, according to a defense spokesperson. To commemorate this milestone, the Deputy General Officer Commanding of the Tiger Division laid a wreath at the memorial’s eternal flame, accompanied by a ceremonial guard of honor and the presence of other division personnel.
In Ladakh, the Army held a solemn commemoration of Vijay Diwas at the ‘Hall of Fame’ in Leh, recognizing the bravery of fallen soldiers. Major General Dinesh Kumar Singh, Chief of Staff of the Fire and Fury Corps, led the tribute by laying a wreath. The ceremony was attended by military officers, junior commissioned officers, and other ranks from the Fire and Fury Corps, as well as the Air Force Station in Leh and other units. The event concluded with a commitment to preserve the legacy of war heroes and a pledge to safeguard the nation’s sovereignty.
