Jammu, Dec 16: The Army’s northern command held wreath-laying ceremonies on Monday across various locations in Jammu and Kashmir, as well as Ladakh, to observe Vijay Diwas. This day commemorates India’s triumph over Pakistan in the 1971 war, which resulted in the establishment of Bangladesh as a sovereign nation.
The Northern Command, based in Udhampur, recognized this significant occasion with a wreath-laying ceremony led by General Officer Commanding-in-Chief Lt Gen M V Suchindra Kumar at Dhruva War Memorial, as stated by the Army.
“He (Lt Gen Kumar) engaged with veterans who continue to motivate us through their remarkable spirit and dedication,” the Northern Command remarked in a post on X.
Meanwhile, the Jammu-based Tiger Division also observed the day at the ‘Balidan Stambh’, a war memorial located here.
This ceremony honored the ultimate sacrifices made by the brave soldiers during the India-Pakistan war of 1971, in which the Indian armed forces achieved victory over the Pakistan Army in just 13 days, concluding the conflict on December 16, 1971, as mentioned by a defence spokesperson.
In remembrance of the occasion, the deputy general officer commanding of the Tiger Division laid a wreath at the eternal flame of the memorial, accompanied by a ceremonial guard of honour and in the presence of other division ranks, he noted.
In the Union Territory of Ladakh, the Army commemorated Vijay Diwas with a solemn ceremony at the ‘Hall of Fame’ in Leh, paying tribute to the valorous soldiers.
Chief of Staff, Fire and Fury Corps, Major General Dinesh Kumar Singh led the homage by placing a wreath, according to the spokesperson.
The ceremony was attended by military officers, junior commissioned officers, and other ranks from the Fire and Fury Corps, Air Force Station, Leh, and additional units.
The event concluded with a pledge to carry forward the legacy of the war heroes and a commitment to safeguarding the nation’s sovereignty, the spokesperson added.
