New Delhi, Dec 25: The central government has appointed senior bureaucrat Arunish Chawla as the revenue secretary in a major administrative reshuffle carried out on Wednesday.
Chawla, an Indian Administrative Service (IAS) officer from the 1992 batch of the Bihar cadre, is currently the secretary for pharmaceuticals. He will now serve as the secretary of the Department of Revenue under the Ministry of Finance, as stated in a personnel ministry announcement.
The role of revenue secretary became available after the previous holder, Sanjay Malhotra, took over as the governor of the Reserve Bank of India earlier this month.
Chawla will also maintain his additional responsibilities as secretary of the Ministry of Culture until a regular appointment is made, as per the announcement.
Amit Agrawal, the chief executive officer of the Unique Identification Authority of India, will step in as the new pharmaceuticals secretary in Chawla’s place.
Vineet Joshi, who has been serving as Manipur’s chief secretary, has been designated as the new higher education secretary. Joshi, also from the 1992 IAS batch, became the Manipur chief secretary in May last year, previously serving as the additional secretary in the Department of Higher Education within the Education Ministry.
Rachna Shah, the textiles secretary, has been appointed to head the Department of Personnel and Training, according to the order.
Sanjay Sethi, a senior IAS officer currently positioned in Maharashtra, will be the new secretary of the National Commission for Minorities, taking over from Neelam Shammi Rao, who has been appointed textiles secretary in Shah’s stead.
Neerja Sekhar, currently the special secretary in the Ministry of Information and Broadcasting, will transition to the role of director general of the National Productivity Council under the Department for Promotion of Industry and Internal Trade, as noted in the order.
