BEIJING, Dec 8: On Sunday, China expressed concern over the recent rebel takeover in Syria, which led to the ousting of President Bashar al-Assad. The Chinese government has called on the new forces to prioritize the safety of Chinese citizens and organizations operating within the country.
In response to the situation in Syria, which has seen China previously supportive of Assad’s regime, officials stated they are closely monitoring developments and hope for a swift return to stability.
According to a Foreign Ministry statement, the Chinese Embassy in Damascus remains operational and is providing assistance to its nationals in the region.
“We urge all relevant parties in Syria to guarantee the security of Chinese establishments and personnel,” the statement read.
The government is actively facilitating the exit of Chinese nationals who wish to leave Syria safely and is maintaining communication with those who remain, offering guidance on staying safe, it added.
“The Chinese Embassy continues its operations, fulfilling its duty in Syria, and will provide ongoing support to Chinese nationals in need,” the statement confirmed.
Previously, as rebel forces advanced towards Damascus, China expressed significant worry about the state of affairs in Syria, affirming its support for the nation’s efforts to maintain security and stability.
State-run Xinhua reported that opposition forces captured the capital in a rapid offensive, resulting in major cities falling “like dominos within days.”
After the takeover, opposition fighters appeared on state TV to proclaim the fall of Damascus and the end of Assad’s reign, according to reports. (PTI)
