NEW DELHI, Dec 29: The ashes of former Prime Minister Manmohan Singh were scattered in the Yamuna River near the Majnu ka Tila Gurdwara by his family, following traditional Sikh customs.
On Sunday morning, Singh’s family collected the ashes from Nigambodh Ghat and brought them to the ‘Asth Ghat’ along the Yamuna riverbank adjacent to the gurdwara.
Present at the immersion were Singh’s wife, Gursharan Kaur, their three daughters — Upinder, Daman, and Amrit Singh — and other relatives.
As part of the Sikh rituals, the family plans to conduct an ‘Akhand Path’ at their residence on 3 Motilal Nehru Marg on January 1.
Additionally, a ‘bhog’ ceremony, along with ‘Antim Ardas’ and ‘kirtan’, will take place on January 3 at the Rakab Ganj Gurdwara near the Parliament complex.
Singh passed away on December 26 at AIIMS Delhi at the age of 92 due to age-related health issues.
The former Prime Minister, known for initiating economic liberalization in the 1990s, received a state funeral at Nigambodh Ghat on Saturday.
President Droupadi Murmu led the nation in honoring the late Prime Minister.
The Congress party shared on its official X handle, “We will always remember Manmohan Singh Ji’s service to the nation, his dedication, and his simplicity,” along with images from the immersion.
In contrast, BJP leader Manjinder Singh Sirsa expressed disappointment over the absence of any members of the Gandhi family during the ashes immersion.
“It’s a sad moment for all of us. However, it’s true that no one from the Gandhi family was present today… When there were no cameras, there was no one from Congress. This is regrettable. Manmohan Singh is highly respected,” Sirsa commented. (Agencies)
