BRISBANE, Dec 18: In a surprising turn of events, India’s leading off-spinner R Ashwin announced his immediate retirement from international cricket while the Test series against Australia is still ongoing.
Ashwin concludes his career as the second-highest wicket-taker for India in Test matches, with 537 wickets in 106 appearances, trailing only Anil Kumble, who holds the record with 619 wickets. He will continue playing club cricket.
“I won’t take too much of your time. Today is my final day as an India cricketer,” Ashwin stated during a joint press conference with team captain Rohit Sharma following the drawn third Test. He opted not to answer any questions and left shortly after making his announcement.
The 38-year-old participated in the day-night Test in Adelaide, claiming one wicket.
Rohit Sharma expressed support for Ashwin, saying, “He was very, very sure of his decision. We should stand by what he wants,” after Ashwin exited the stage. The two were seen sharing an emotional moment in the dressing room just hours before the announcement.
The BCCI paid tribute to Ashwin, describing him as “a name synonymous with mastery, wizardry, brilliance, and innovation” in a post on social media.
