Srinagar, Feb 25: This year, Asia’s largest Tulip Garden in Srinagar is poised to unveil an impressive spectacle of 1.7 million tulip bulbs, featuring two new varieties sourced from the Netherlands, as announced by officials.
Located at the foothills of the Zabarwan Range and overlooking the famous Dal Lake, the Tulip Garden continues to captivate tourists and nature enthusiasts from across the globe.
“Each year, the Floriculture Department aims to introduce new tulip varieties to enhance the garden’s vibrancy and charm. This year, we’ve included two additional varieties to enrich the display,” said Assistant Floriculture Officer (AFO) Asif Ahmad in a statement to UNI.
Last year’s garden showcased 72 varieties of tulips in myriad colors, and this year offers an expanded selection with a total of 74 varieties, promising an even more stunning visual experience for visitors. The garden is expected to welcome guests after March 20.
“The newly added tulip varieties—Triumph and Darwin Hybrid—imported from the Netherlands, will bring a fresh burst of color and allure to the garden,” Asif mentioned.
In addition to these 74 tulip varieties, the garden will also feature Daffodils, Hyacinths, Muscari, and other blooming bulbs and trees this season.
He noted that a total of 1.7 million bulbs, including tulips and other premium varieties, will be on display to greet tourists.
According to the AFO, the tulips are imported from the Netherlands, the world’s leading producer of these flowers, with India also acquiring them from this country.
“Every year, we refresh the color scheme of the garden, and this year’s layout will differ significantly from last year’s,” Asif explained.
While there are over 3,000 varieties of tulips, the displays are curated based on primary colors—Red, Yellow, and White—which tend to delight visitors.
Asif also shared that the Tulip Garden has nearly reached its full development potential, with flourishing greenery, and highlighted ongoing work on Project Sakura, which is expected to take a few more years to complete.
Other enhancements, including channels and high-rise fountains, are close to completion.
The Tulip Garden has achieved recognition in the world records for its breathtaking beauty, positioning it as a unique attraction that bolsters tourism in the region.
Last year, it attracted an impressive 465,000 tourists who came to enjoy the diverse array of flowers and the natural beauty of the surroundings within just 25 days. The tulip blooms contribute significantly to the local economy and play a vital role in the Kashmir valley’s tourism potential.
