CAPE TOWN, Dec 15: At least 11 fatalities have been reported due to Cyclone Chido, which wreaked havoc in the French territory of Mayotte located in the Indian Ocean, according to France’s Interior Ministry on Sunday.
The ministry indicated that obtaining an accurate number of casualties is challenging, and there are concerns that the death toll may rise. A hospital in Mayotte has reported that nine individuals are in critical condition, with an additional 246 others injured.
The tropical cyclone passed through the southeastern Indian Ocean, impacting Comoros and Madagascar as well. Mayotte was directly hit by the cyclone and experienced significant destruction on Saturday, with officials noting it’s the worst cyclone to affect Mayotte in 90 years.
Chido has since made landfall in Mozambique on the African mainland, prompting emergency officials to warn that up to 2.5 million people could be affected in two northern provinces. (AP)
