Dehradun, Feb 28: On Friday, 32 out of the 57 Border Roads Organisation workers who were caught in an avalanche near Mana, a high-altitude border village in Uttarakhand’s Chamoli district, were successfully rescued, according to sources.
The avalanche had buried a Border Roads Organisation (BRO) camp situated between Mana and Badrinath, and multiple rescue teams faced challenging conditions, including heavy snow and rain, to save the workers. Fortunately, there have been no immediate reports of casualties.
Mana, located three kilometers from Badrinath, is the last village along the India-Tibet border, situated at an elevation of 3,200 meters.
Sources indicated that the 32 rescued individuals were safely transported from the avalanche site to the ITBP camp in Mana village for medical assistance. They mentioned that rescue operations were suspended due to adverse weather conditions and the threat of additional avalanches.
Rescue efforts will resume once the weather conditions improve, as reported.
Following the primary avalanche that impacted the BRO camp, two minor avalanches occurred, leading to the temporary suspension of the rescue operation, with sources noting that the area remains susceptible to avalanches during the winter months.
The head of Mana village informed PTI that in previous winters, this camp was typically relocated to Badrinath. However, this year the camp remained in place due to minimal snowfall, he explained.
Badrinath Dham is located at the base of the Nar and Narayan mountains, with the Alaknanda river flowing between them. The avalanche took place on the Nar mountain. (Agencies)
