DHAKA, Dec 1: A Bangladeshi court has scheduled a bail hearing for Hindu leader Chinmoy Krishna Das, who was arrested last week on sedition charges, for December 3, as reported by the media.
The hearing will be presided over by Metropolitan Sessions Judge Mohammad Saiful Islam, as stated by Additional Deputy Commissioner Mofizur Rahman from Chattogram Metropolitan Police.
An official from the Chattogram court informed that while the hearing date had already been confirmed, its announcement was postponed due to a boycott and work stoppage by lawyers on Wednesday and Thursday.
The hearing is set for December 3, according to bdnews24.com.
Das, who serves as a spokesperson for the Bangladesh Sammilita Sanatani Jagran Jote, was taken into custody at Dhaka’s Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport on Monday on charges of alleged sedition. Following his arrest, a Chattogram court denied him bail and remanded him to jail, sparking protests from his supporters.
Violence in the southeastern port city of Chattogram resulted in the death of a lawyer amid protests related to his arrest.
On October 30, a sedition case was filed against 19 individuals, including Das, at the Kotwali Police Station in Chattogram, accusing them of disrespecting Bangladesh’s national flag during a rally by the Hindu community in the New Market area.
Additionally, on Thursday, Bangladeshi authorities ordered the freezing of bank accounts for 30 days belonging to 17 individuals connected to the International Society for Krishna Consciousness (ISKCON), including the former member Das. (PTI)
