JAMMU, Feb 21: Today, an urgent meeting of the Advisory Committee of the Jammu and Kashmir High Court Bar Association, Jammu was held to discuss the proposed amendments to The Advocates Act, 1961 as introduced by the Union Government.
During the meeting, President K. Nirmal Kotwal elaborated on the suggested changes to The Advocates Act, 1961, prompting thorough discussions and solicitations for opinions from members present.
The majority of members expressed opposition to the proposed amendments, labeling them as unconstitutional, undemocratic, authoritative, and dictatorial, cautioning that they would threaten the independence of advocates and potentially weaken the institution.
A unanimous decision was reached for the Jammu and Kashmir High Court Bar Association, Jammu to organize a protest against the proposed changes to The Advocates Act, 1961, as a show of solidarity with the Bar Council of India and other Bar Councils, including All Bar Associations, scheduled for Saturday at the District Court Complex, Jammu.
The meeting saw participation from office bearers of the Jammu and Kashmir High Court Bar Association, Jammu including Baldev Singh (Vice President), Pardeep Majotra (General Secretary), Anshu Mahajan (Joint Secretary), and Rahul Aggarwal (Treasurer), along with several senior advocates and other members.
