The tunnel, which stretches a remarkable 1.1 km, plays a vital role in the 16.1-km project linking Kalali in Rajouri district to Bhataduria in Poonch district, according to the spokesman.
It will shorten the travel distance between the two regions by 10.8 km.
The spokesperson added that this project would provide an alternative route for the movement of both troops and civilians through the rugged terrain connecting Rajouri to Poonch.
The inaugural blast was activated by Brig Neeraj Madan, Chief Engineer of BRO’s Project Sampark, and A M Prasad, Regional Officer of the Ministry of Road Transport and Highways in Jammu, who initiated the process by pressing the button. Prior to the blast, a ‘puja’ (prayer) ceremony was held at the site, attended by civil administration officials, emphasizing the joint efforts of the Border Roads Organisation and various district administration departments.
The spokesman noted that this project is expected to improve connectivity in the region by cutting the distance by 10.8 km, thus enabling smoother and more efficient transport between crucial locations.
The Bhimber Gali Tunnel is part of the BRO’s ongoing initiatives to enhance regional infrastructure development, as stated by the spokesman.
Following the successful Naushera Tunnel breakthrough (700 meters) on January 29, 2024, the BRO is rapidly advancing infrastructure improvements across the challenging landscapes of the Rajouri and Poonch districts.
Brig Madan reiterated BRO’s dedication to driving important road projects aimed at boosting connectivity in remote areas and reinforcing defence infrastructure in frontline regions.
Ongoing developments highlight the organization’s commitment to national security and regional growth, according to the chief engineer.
He added that once the Bhimber Gali Tunnel is completed, it will not only facilitate the movement of civilians and military personnel but will also significantly enhance economic development and regional accessibility.
The BRO remains resolute in its mission to construct and upgrade strategic road networks across challenging terrains, ensuring seamless connectivity for both defence and civilian needs, the officer concluded.
