Hangzhou, Dec 12: The Indian women’s doubles team of Treesa Jolly and Gayatri Gopichand triumphed over the Malaysian duo of Pearly Tan and Thinaah Muralitharan in straight games during their second Group A match, maintaining their hopes for a semifinal spot at the BWF World Tour Finals on Thursday.
The Indian pair achieved victory with scores of 21-19, 21-19 in just 46 minutes of play. After suffering a loss in their opening match against China’s world No. 1 pair, Liu Sheng Shu and Tan Ning, the duo bounced back effectively.
In their previous match, Treesa and Gayatri had narrowly lost to Sheng and Tan with scores of 20-22, 22-20, 21-14, with their opponents having previously earned a silver medal at the Paris Olympics.
Currently, the Indians sit in second place behind the Chinese team and must win against the Japanese pair of Nami Matsuyama and Chiharu Shida on Friday to secure their semifinal position.
The Indian players started the match with strong intent, quickly establishing a 6-2 lead in the first game. Despite the Malaysians fighting back, the Indians maintained their composure in the crucial moments to clinch the first game.
The second game remained fiercely contested until both teams were tied at five points, after which the Malaysians gained a slight advantage. However, Treesa and Gayatri showed remarkable poise, managing to score two consecutive points to conclude the match successfully. (PTI)
