NEW DELHI, Dec 19: A total of 13,795 hazardous locations have been recorded on the National Highways, with short-term corrective actions completed on 9,525 of these locations, while permanent fixes have been implemented at 4,777 sites, as reported in Parliament on Thursday.
Nitin Gadkari, the Union Minister for Road Transport and Highways, disclosed in a written response to the Lok Sabha that Karnataka has the highest number of identified black spots (1,217), followed by Andhra Pradesh with 1,202 and Telangana with 1,121.
The Ministry of Road Transport and Highways is mainly tasked with the development, management, and maintenance of National Highways (NHs).
Black spots on NHs are designated based on a history of accidents that result in fatalities and serious injuries occurring in those areas.
“The government has initiated immediate short-term measures for these black spots, including road markings, signage, crash barriers, road studs, delineators, closing unauthorized median openings, and implementing traffic calming strategies,” Gadkari stated.
Additionally, the minister highlighted that long-term measures such as enhancing road geometry, improving junctions, widening sections of the carriageway, and constructing underpasses or overpasses will also be pursued at these locations based on site assessments for permanent rectification. (PTI)
