- Evaluates the Culture Department, advocates for a cultural policy & the establishment of Tehzeeb Mahal
JAMMU, Dec 10: Chief Minister Omar Abdullah presided over a review meeting for the Department of Culture at the Civil Secretariat, with a focus on revitalizing the cultural heritage and infrastructure of Jammu and Kashmir.
In his address, the Chief Minister highlighted the original vision for the Tehzeeb Mahal in Srinagar, emphasizing its crucial role in supporting local artists. “Tehzeeb Mahal should act as a venue for artists to showcase their talents while maintaining its essential theme. We should widen the available area as much as possible to fulfill this vision,” he stated.
Additionally, he instructed the department to restart the restoration project for Naagar Nagar at the base of Hari Parbat, which has been stalled for ten years, to safeguard its crumbling walls. He stressed the necessity for a comprehensive Cultural Policy for J&K and encouraged the department to consult with stakeholders.
“Work together with stakeholders to create a solid Cultural Policy,” he urged.
He also called for the immediate filling of departmental vacancies to ensure smooth operations.
The Principal Secretary of Culture provided an in-depth overview of the department’s activities, showcasing its initiatives through various directorates, including Archives, Archaeology & Museums, Libraries and Research, and the Academy of Art, Culture & Languages.
The meeting reviewed progress on several significant projects, such as the rehabilitation of the Mubarak Mandi Heritage Complex and archival repositories.
Participants were informed of the digitization status of archival records, which has been completed in Jammu and is 50% done in Srinagar, with six lakh records transferred to a new facility near Kala Kendra at a cost of Rs 7.2 crore.
The meeting also outlined a 100-day plan for cultural and heritage development in Jammu and Srinagar.
Key initiatives discussed include the launch of a new archival repository, modernization of the SRS Library as part of the Smart City Project, restoration of 16 heritage sites, and the finalization of multiple library and cultural infrastructure projects.
A dedicated presentation on Tehzeeb Mahal detailed its design, revival of architectural heritage, and cultural components, further solidifying the government’s resolve to preserve and promote Jammu and Kashmir’s rich legacy.
The meeting was attended by Chief Minister’s Advisor Nasir Aslam Wani, Chief Secretary Atal Dulloo, Additional Chief Secretary to CM Dheeraj Gupta, Principal Secretary Finance Santosh D Vaidya, Principal Secretary Culture Suresh Gupta, Secretary PWD, and several senior officials. Officers based in Kashmir participated via video conferencing.
