NEW DELHI, Feb 16: Today, Chief Minister of Tripura, Dr. Manik Saha, met with Union Minister Dr. Jitendra Singh to address important state issues. Topics of discussion included advanced weather forecasting, administrative matters, and enhancing the bamboo industry. The conversation also highlighted the recently launched Agartala-Akhaura railway link, which aims to improve connectivity between Northeast India and Bangladesh.
Due to this year’s exceptional rainfall in Tripura, exceeding 500 mm, the Chief Minister requested technological assistance for better forecasting and disaster readiness. Dr. Jitendra Singh assured that the Ministry of Earth Sciences would establish a modern weather radar in the state within a year. This new radar, in conjunction with the existing Space research center nearby, will significantly improve real-time predictions for rain and cyclones, aiding in the mitigation of extreme weather impacts.
Additionally, the meeting addressed the development of Tripura’s extensive bamboo resources. The Union Minister noted that specialized institutes in Assam (Jorhat) and Manipur focusing on biotechnology and bamboo research will collaborate with the Tripura Government to maximize bamboo’s economic benefits. This initiative is expected to encourage industrial applications and promote sustainable livelihoods, contributing to economic growth in the state.
Administrative issues, including the assignment of bureaucrats and officers in Tripura, were also discussed. The Union Minister acknowledged these concerns and promised to engage with the appropriate authorities.
Dr. Manik Saha also informed Dr. Jitendra Singh about the establishment of Tripura’s first Government Dental College, a significant advancement given his own background in dentistry. This college aims to enhance healthcare infrastructure and improve educational opportunities in the state.
Furthermore, the operationalization of the Agartala-Akhaura railway link was a focal point of the discussion. This project, which Dr. Jitendra Singh had championed during his tenure as Minister for the Development of North Eastern Region (DoNER), spans 12.24 km (5.46 km in Tripura and 6.78 km in Bangladesh) and seeks to restore historical connections between Northeast India and Bangladeshi ports, thereby boosting trade and enhancing people-to-people connections. This link is anticipated to improve economic prospects for Tripura and the entire Northeast region by providing a quicker route to international markets.
Overall, the meeting underscored the Centre’s commitment to facilitating Tripura’s development through technological advancement, effective administrative coordination, and improved regional connectivity.
