JAMMU, Jan 20: Following two nights of milder temperatures, the cold wave has returned to the Kashmir Valley. Srinagar recorded a low of minus 3.2 degrees Celsius on Monday.
In contrast, the Jammu region experienced a notable improvement, with Jammu city registering a minimum temperature of 9.6 degrees.
Specific temperatures included minus 3.2 in Srinagar, minus 5.4 at the Gulmarg ski resort, and minus 6.4 in Pahalgam. Other locations in the Jammu division reported minimums of 9.6 degrees in Jammu city, 10.2 in Katra (Mata Vaishno Devi base camp), 3.9 in Batote, 0.7 in Banihal, and 2 degrees in Bhaderwah.
According to the Meteorological Department, “On January 20 and 21, expect a generally cloudy sky with a chance of light rain or snow in scattered areas. On January 22, anticipate a cloudy sky with light to moderate rain in the plains of Jammu and snow in many locations. The higher reaches of Chenab Valley and the Pir Panjal Range may also receive light to moderate snowfall. January 23 will feature a generally cloudy sky with possibilities of light rain in the Jammu plains and snow in scattered areas.”
“From January 24 to 28, the weather will be generally dry. Expect a return to cloudy conditions with light rain or snow in isolated areas from January 29 to 31,” the department added.
The advisory encourages tourists, travelers, and transporters to adhere to administrative and traffic guidance.
The intense cold period known as ‘Chillai Kalan’ began on December 21 and is set to end on January 30, after which the weather in the Valley is expected to gradually improve leading into spring. (AGENCIES)
