New Delhi, Feb 8: The outcome of the Delhi Assembly elections is not an endorsement of Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s policies but rather a referendum on Arvind Kejriwal and the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP), the Congress party stated on Saturday, pledging to recover from yet another electoral defeat.
The Congress expressed confidence in forming a government in the national capital by 2030.
The BJP has regained power in Delhi after over 26 years, decisively ousting the AAP in a significant victory that expands its influence across the country. Once again, the Congress failed to secure any seats, continuing its streak from the 2015 and 2020 elections.
Jairam Ramesh, Congress general secretary in charge of communications, emphasized that the election results should be viewed primarily as a referendum on Kejriwal and AAP.
“At the peak of the Prime Minister’s popularity in 2015 and 2020, AAP triumphed in Delhi. This indicates that the vote reflects a rejection of Arvind Kejriwal’s deceptive politics and his inflated claims of success, rather than an affirmation of the Prime Minister’s policies,” he remarked in a post on X.
He added that the Congress party focused on exposing the numerous scandals that occurred during Kejriwal’s tenure, with voters delivering their verdict on his 12 years of “misrule.”
“While the Congress anticipated a better performance, we have nonetheless increased our vote share. Our campaign was vigorous. Although we may not hold seats in the assembly now, we maintain a presence in Delhi, which will continue to grow through the dedicated efforts of our numerous workers,” Ramesh asserted.
“There will be a Congress government in Delhi again by 2030,” he affirmed.
Pawan Khera, head of the Congress media and publicity department, criticized supposed liberals for their reaction to the election outcome, calling it “bizarre.”
“These individuals did not advocate for opposition unity when AAP contested elections in Goa, Gujarat, and Haryana, undermining the secular vote. The results from Delhi are a rejection of the Trojan horse that sought to damage the liberal cause nationally,” he commented.
“Most liberals are rightly celebrating the collapse of this facade, allowing the true advocate of liberal values—the Indian National Congress—to emerge stronger, ready to challenge and defeat the BJP,” Khera stated on X. (Agencies)
