Jammu, Mar 5: Congress chief whip Nizamuddin Bhat expressed strong support for the establishment of a House panel or an all-party delegation in Jammu and Kashmir to address the urgent need for the restoration of statehood with Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Union Home Minister Amit Shah.
During a discussion on the lieutenant governor’s address in the House, Bhat emphasized that the ongoing delay in restoring statehood is resulting in “more harm than good” for the region.
“This House should form a panel to engage with the Government of India and various national parties. If that isn’t feasible, we must raise this concern with the public across the country to advocate for the restoration of Jammu and Kashmir’s statehood. The true commitment of everyone will be gauged by the establishment of this panel,” he stated.
Bhat contended that the Reorganisation Act, which downgraded Jammu and Kashmir to a Union Territory, is merely a temporary measure, with a clear promise made in Parliament to restore statehood.
“Restoring statehood is not just a constitutional requirement; it’s a moral duty for the prime minister and others to honor the commitments made in this House and elsewhere,” he added.
Bhat urged Chief Minister Omar Abdullah to spearhead the initiative and form an all-party delegation to meet with Prime Minister Modi and Home Minister Shah.
“He possesses a strong mandate and advocates for the people’s aspirations in Jammu and Kashmir. I urge him to embrace this responsibility,” he remarked.
He called upon the chief minister to request an audience with Prime Minister Modi and Home Minister Shah to discuss the pressing issues facing the region.
“The delegation must articulate that Jammu and Kashmir is in a state of limbo—a disrespected state,” he added.
Characterizing Jammu and Kashmir’s current situation as “a state in limbo,” Bhat highlighted that the matter transcends politics and emotions; it pertains to dignity and honor.
“As members of this House, it is our duty to be proactive and prompt in our actions,” he asserted.
Stressing the significance of Parliament, Bhat reminded everyone that Prime Minister Modi had committed to restoring statehood during his address in the House.
“This legislature has conveyed its desire for restoration with overwhelming support. It is essential to uphold the dignity and honor of this House,” he insisted.
Bhat also pointed out the necessity for a “singular power system” rather than a “dual system” in Jammu and Kashmir, advocating for full legislative powers.
He underscored the importance of safeguarding the region’s constitutional culture, identity, ecology, and environment, which he believes are at risk.
Bhat’s statements occur amid ongoing political discussions regarding the future governance of Jammu and Kashmir, with multiple parties calling for the restoration of full statehood.
