NEW DELHI, Dec 14: BJP MP Tejasvi Surya criticized the Congress party during a session in the Lok Sabha on Saturday, claiming that those who have undermined the Constitution are now pretending to be its advocates, in what he describes as a longstanding “hypocritical drama” in the country.
Engaging in a two-day discussion titled “Glorious Journey of 75 Years of the Constitution of India”, the MP from Bangalore South accused parties like Congress of viewing India not as a civilizational state or a nation, but merely as a disorganized collection of states.
“For a long time, there has been a deceitful performance in this country, with those who attack the Constitution presenting themselves as its defenders. This hypocrisy needs to be brought to light,” he stated. “The BJP stands as the protector of the Constitution and the unity of the nation. In contrast, parties such as Congress see India merely as a mix of states, which constitutes an assault on the Constitution. This fundamental difference in how we view the nation and the Constitution is what has led to Congress and its successive dynasties attacking not only the Constitution but also the very essence of this country,” he remarked.
Surya further alleged that the addition of the terms “socialist” and “secular” to the Constitution was an effort to make it more rigid.
“The forced inclusion of these terms during the 42nd amendment wasn’t the first attempt to enshrine these concepts in the Constitution and render it inflexible. Even in the discussions of the Constituent Assembly, proposals to include ‘socialist’ and ‘secular’ in the Preamble were firmly rejected by Baba Saheb (Ambedkar), and the reasons for this rejection are quite significant,” he added.
He highlighted that many opposition members posited on Friday that Congress acted with noble intentions.
“Their ultimate goal was to monopolize political power and control the economy, ensuring no challenge to the Congress’s leading family. The intent was to institutionalize socialism, claiming there was only one form of governance and a single political party, thereby sustaining dynastic rule and enabling them to dominate politics and, by that, control the economy through state influence.
“This harmful cycle has kept the nation impoverished, hungry, and backward, and imposing socialism has had severe repercussions for our country,” he asserted.
Surya also criticized the DMK for its leaders’ comments aimed at abolishing Sanatan Dharma.
He charged the Congress with past actions such as imposing the Emergency, suspending fundamental rights, and mandating forced sterilizations as attacks on the Constitution, questioning their current discussions surrounding it. (PTI)
