Officials have stated that this important project will involve developing critical infrastructure, which includes laying pipelines, establishing pumping stations, and creating distribution networks.
“Natural gas, being a cleaner fossil fuel compared to coal and oil, will help in reducing greenhouse gas emissions and improving air quality, thus benefiting both the environment and public health. The project is designed to provide a continuous gas supply throughout the year, irrespective of weather or road conditions,” they explained.
The anticipated route of the main pipeline runs from Gurdaspur through Pathankot, Kathua, Samba, and into Jammu City, starting in Gurdaspur and terminating in Jammu City.
The pipeline is planned to transport up to 2 million standard cubic meters of gas per day.
Officials mentioned that the Gurdaspur-Jammu pipeline is set to be crucial in fulfilling the natural gas needs of the Union Territory of Jammu and Kashmir. Upon completion, the pipeline will deliver eco-friendly fuel to Jammu and eventually to Kashmir, reinforcing the region’s energy security.
Union Minister Jitendra Singh recently provided an update via a post on X (formerly Twitter), stating, “The 160-km Gurdaspur-Jammu Tawi natural gas pipeline project has commenced, with plans to supply domestic gas to households by 2026. GAIL is laying the pipeline along the Delhi-Katra Expressway, with initial efforts focused on sectionalizing valves in Kathua and Hiranagar.” (KNO)
