New DELHI, Jan 7: Union Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw announced on Tuesday that the Digital Personal Data Protection (DPDP) Rules will undergo further refinement to ensure that children can safely engage with technology while being protected from potential digital dangers.
During a press briefing, Vaishnaw emphasized that the rules will adapt based on insights gained from their implementation.
“We aim to enhance the DPDP Rules to empower children with technology while safeguarding them from various risks,” Vaishnaw stated.
The government released the draft of the DPDP Rules 2025 on January 3, and it is open for public feedback until February 18, 2024.
As per the draft, digital platforms may only process a child’s data with the explicit consent of a verifiable guardian or parent.
This verification can be executed via voluntarily provided identity and age details, or through a virtual token issued by an authorized entity or government body responsible for maintaining personal data.
Vaishnaw mentioned that the token system has proven effective in various scenarios, including Aadhaar-based verifications.
“These tokens will be temporary and valid for a single transaction only, after which they will be automatically destroyed,” he explained.
The minister indicated that sector-specific guidelines could be developed if necessary, following consultations with industry experts and stakeholders.
He assured that the use of virtual tokens would not jeopardize individual privacy.
Furthermore, Vaishnaw noted that whistleblowers would remain protected under the DPDP Act, which does not impose any limits on filing complaints. (PTI)
