NEW DELHI, Dec 13: Union Telecom Minister Jyotiraditya Scindia announced on Friday that the Department of Posts and the Ministry of External Affairs have reached an agreement to establish an additional 600 passport seva kendras in post offices.
During the India Economic Enclave 2024, the minister highlighted that India Post operates approximately 640,000 sales points nationwide—an unrivaled scale globally.
“In the next 3-4 years, we aim to evolve into a citizen-centric service. Today, we have signed a pact with the MEA to launch 600 new passport seva kendras, which we hope will serve one crore citizens annually through our network,” Scindia stated.
Since its inception in 2017, the Post Office Passport Seva Kendras (POPSKs) have played a crucial role in providing passport services to over 15.2 million citizens.
The POPSK network has seen significant growth, currently featuring 442 operational centers across the country.
According to official sources, the new 600 POPSK centers are expected to be operational by 2028-29.
“We will also expand our offerings in postal and life insurance, along with our Rural Postal Life Insurance (RPLI). Ultimately, our focus will remain on parcel services,” Scindia added, emphasizing that the postal department is transforming into a more logistics-oriented organization. (PTI)
