Sydney, Jan 2: India’s head coach Gautam Gambhir emphasized the importance of confidentiality in team discussions, asserting that conversations within the dressing room should remain private. He mentioned having some “honest” discussions with his players, underscoring that performance is key to their place in the squad.
Addressing concerns regarding the captaincy of Rohit Sharma, who has been struggling with form, Gambhir refrained from confirming if Rohit would be included in the final XI for the forthcoming Test match against Australia. Amid rising speculation about discord within the team, the assertive coach dismissed such rumors, labeling them as “just reports, not truth.”
“Debates between the coach and players must stay within the dressing room. There were stern discussions, but they are merely reports, not facts,” Gambhir stated at the pre-match press conference.
“As long as honest individuals are part of Indian cricket, it will remain in capable hands. Performance is the only thing that guarantees your place,” he added.
He emphasized that truthfulness is crucial in team discussions.
When questioned about Rohit’s absence at the pre-match press conference, Gambhir reassured that “everything is fine with Rohit.” He indicated that decisions regarding the playing XI would be made after assessing the pitch conditions.
The former opener further mentioned that his discussions with senior player Virat Kohli and Rohit have focused solely on strategies for winning the current Test series.
“Everyone is aware of the areas needing improvement. Our conversations have exclusively revolved around winning Test matches,” he remarked.
Gambhir also confirmed that pacer Akash Deep will be unavailable for the New Year Test due to a stiff back but did not specify a replacement.
While he declined to scrutinize individual performances, particularly concerning Rishabh Pant’s shot selection in critical moments, Gambhir insisted that the team’s interests should come first.
“I prefer not to comment on individual performances. A team-first mentality is essential. Players can express themselves, but contributions come from the team as a whole,” he concluded. (PTI)
