JAMMU, Jan 27: Officials have indicated that organophosphorus poisoning could be the cause of 17 unexplained deaths that took place in the Badhaal village of Rajouri. A leading physician shared that patients admitted to the hospital have received atropine injections, which have proven effective. This antidote is typically utilized for poisoning from organophosphorus nerve agents and certain insecticides.
The doctor noted that while they await official confirmation from top laboratories, the initial response to treatment has been promising. “We used a trial-and-error approach, which yielded positive results. Atropine was administered to two patients for other medical reasons, and they are now recovering well,” he explained.
Given the positive response to atropine, it is plausible that organophosphorus compounds or similar substances may be linked to the string of fatalities in Rajouri. However, the doctor cautioned against jumping to conclusions, emphasizing that definitive reports are still pending.
Over the course of the last two months, at least 17 individuals, including 14 children, have tragically lost their lives, while several others have been hospitalized due to this mysterious illness in Badhaal village. (KNO)
