NEW DELHI, December 10: Minister for Consumer Affairs Pralhad Joshi emphasized on Tuesday that e-commerce companies play a crucial role in fostering a transparent, reliable, and secure shopping experience for consumers.
During his address at the Amazon smbhav Summit, Joshi outlined the government’s comprehensive measures to safeguard consumer rights, including the Consumer Protection Act, the establishment of a central consumer protection authority, consumer helplines, and targeted regulations aimed at preventing unfair trade practices within the e-commerce sector.
The minister highlighted that the future of e-commerce in India is promising, inclusive, and transformative, underscoring the vast potential of the Indian market.
“While this digital revolution presents tremendous opportunities, our Government stresses the importance of ensuring that consumers feel confident in making informed choices. It is equally vital for e-commerce platforms to establish and maintain consumer trust,” Joshi stated.
He also cautioned that the rapid expansion of e-commerce raises significant concerns regarding consumer protection and user rights.
“Under the leadership of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, our Government has initiated several measures to cultivate a reliable and secure e-commerce landscape,” he added.
Existing regulations are designed to protect consumers from unfair practices in the e-commerce industry.
“Online platforms must now provide accurate product information, transparent pricing, disclose the country of origin, and offer clear return and refund policies, all while ensuring product quality,” he mentioned.
The Minister noted that often these platforms promote specific brands, and when consumer complaints arise, they only claim to function as a platform. (PTI)
