SRINAGAR, Mar 5: The renowned ski resort of Gulmarg is gearing up to host the Khelo India Winter Games (KIWG), with athletes buzzing with enthusiasm as they prepare for this grand event.
In recent days, Gulmarg has transformed into a picturesque winter paradise following substantial snowfall, prompting organizers to shift the event dates to March 9. Approximately 1,000 athletes from all over India are set to compete in various winter sports.
Originally planned for February 22 to 25, the event was postponed due to insufficient snow in Gulmarg. However, the latest snowfall has created ideal conditions for these eagerly awaited winter competitions.
“Gulmarg is primed for action! With the fresh blanket of snow and complete readiness, the J&K administration and Sports Council are prepared to host the 2nd leg of #KIWG2025 from 9th to 12th March. A premier winter experience is on the horizon!,” stated the J&K Sports Council.
Athletes have commenced training across multiple slopes, gearing up for a series of exhilarating snow sports events, including ski mountaineering, alpine skiing, snowboarding, and Nordic skiing.
Many competitors expressed their delight and relief upon receiving official confirmation for the event, eager to demonstrate their talents against the stunning backdrop of Gulmarg’s snow-covered terrain.
Rajesh Punia, an athlete from Mumbai, shared his excitement after witnessing the ample snowfall on the slopes.
Participants from around the country are expected to arrive starting March 7 to take part in the competition.
The initial leg of the 5th edition of Khelo India Winter Games took place in January in the Union Territory of Ladakh.
