How to Reach Vaishno Devi

Reaching Vaishno Devi requires a well-planned journey, but with the increasing number of transport facilities, it’s easier than ever.

1. By Air

The nearest airport is the Jammu Airport (IXJ), located about 50 kilometers from Katra, the base town for the Vaishno Devi trek. Regular flights connect Jammu to major cities like Delhi, Mumbai, and Chandigarh. From the airport, you can hire a taxi or take a bus to Katra, which is a 1-2 hour drive.

2. By Train

For train travelers, Shri Mata Vaishno Devi Katra Railway Station is the closest railhead. Direct trains to Katra run from major cities such as Delhi, Mumbai, Kolkata, and Ahmedabad. For those stopping in Jammu, frequent local trains and taxis are available to cover the 45-kilometer distance to Katra.

3. By Road

If you prefer a road trip, Katra is well-connected by highways to various North Indian cities. Buses (both private and state-run) and taxis operate regularly from Jammu, Delhi, Chandigarh, and Amritsar. The scenic drive is an experience in itself, with the lush green landscapes and picturesque views of the foothills.

The Vaishno Devi Trek

The trek to the Vaishno Devi Bhawan starts from Katra and is about 12 kilometers long. While the path is well-paved, there are various ways to complete the journey:

  • On Foot: Most pilgrims prefer walking the entire distance, which takes around 5-8 hours, depending on your pace. There are multiple resting points, eateries, and medical facilities along the way.
  • Palki/Ponies: For those who may find the walk strenuous, palkis (palanquins) and ponies are available for hire.
  • Helicopter Services: For a quicker option, helicopter services operate between Katra and Sanjichhat, which is a 2.5-kilometer walk from the Bhawan.
  • Battery Operated Vehicles: Seniors and differently-abled pilgrims can also use battery-operated vehicles available between Adhkuwari and Bhawan.

Best Time to Visit Vaishno Devi

While Vaishno Devi is open to devotees year-round, the best time to visit is during the cooler months of March to October. The weather during this period is pleasant, making the trek more comfortable. However, the peak season, especially during Navratras in April and October, sees an influx of pilgrims, so plan accordingly.
