JAMMU, Feb 24: A heartfelt tribute was paid to Sheikh Nazir Ahmed, former general secretary of the National Conference, in honor of his 10th death anniversary.
Present at the ceremony were Dr. Farooq Abdullah, president of the J&K National Conference and former Chief Minister, along with Deputy Chief Minister Surinder Choudhary.
Leading a gathering of party leaders and dedicated members, Farooq praised Advocate Sheikh Nazir for his simplicity, integrity, commitment to public service, organizational skills, and political insight. He noted that Sheikh Nazir remained loyal to his principles throughout his life, refusing to seek any position of power.
Dr. Abdullah further emphasized that Sheikh Nazir was among the rare leaders in the nation who embraced a humble lifestyle while offering substantial service to the residents of Jammu and Kashmir.
Paying his respects, Deputy Chief Minister Surinder Choudhary remarked that Sheikh Nazir was a cornerstone of the organization, maintaining strong connections with the grassroots throughout his life. He reflected on various aspects of Nazir’s remarkable political journey, stating, “Nazir has left a lasting legacy of selfless service that will continue to inspire future generations and shape their political paths.” He highlighted how Nazir was instrumental in cultivating the National Conference as a mass movement that championed the dignity and rights of the people of Jammu and Kashmir, regardless of their background.
Recalling the exceptional qualities of Sheikh Nazir, Choudhary noted, “The most fitting tribute to him would be our efforts to guide the state toward peace and progress while empowering the community at the grassroots level.”
Earlier in the morning, a special prayer session and `Quran Khani’ were convened for the peaceful repose of the departed soul led by senior leader GH Malik at the party office. Dr. Farooq Abdullah also participated in these prayers.
