BANGKOK, Dec 30: A fire occurred at a hotel close to Bangkok’s renowned Khao San Road, a favorite spot for tourists, resulting in the deaths of three foreign nationals and injuring several others, according to Thai police on Monday.
All three victims of the fire that broke out Sunday night were foreign tourists, as stated by Police Colonel Sanong Saengmanee to The Associated Press. One was discovered deceased at the scene while the other two passed away after being rushed to the hospital.
Authorities later identified the deceased as a woman from Brazil, a man from Ukraine, and a man from the United States. Four individuals received hospital treatment, with one in critical condition.
The fire started on the fifth floor of the six-story Ember Hotel, as reported by police. Khao San Road is a popular area for backpackers in the Thai capital, known for its vibrant nightlife.
The fire was eventually brought under control, and investigations into its cause are underway.
At the time of the incident, seventy-five guests were staying at the hotel.
Sreekanth Kolamala, a 37-year-old Indian citizen residing in Singapore who was on holiday in Thailand, witnessed the rescue efforts and remarked that firefighters “smashed the glass over there to attempt to pull people out.”
Sanga Ruangwattanakul, president of the Khao San Road Business Association, stood outside The Ember Hotel on Monday assessing the damage. He indicated that around 20,000 people were anticipated to attend a New Year’s Eve countdown celebration on Tuesday night.
“Now everyone is concerned about what occurred and the potential impact on tomorrow’s event. However, we are not worried as we have already met with the police and arranged for over 150 police and district personnel to ensure safety on Khao San Road,” he stated.
Bangkok Governor Chadchart Sittipunt also stressed the need for safety in light of the incident, especially with New Year’s Eve approaching, when fireworks and various festivities are planned throughout the city. (AP)
