SINGAPORE, Feb 26: Five men of Indian descent received prison sentences ranging from two to three years, along with caning, for their involvement in a riot that resulted in the death of a former bouncer at a hotel in Singapore.
Sridharan Elangovan was sentenced to 36 months in prison and six strokes of the cane; Manojkumar Velayanatham received 30 months and four strokes; Sashikumar Pakirsamy was given 24 months and two strokes; Puthenvilla Keith Peter got 26 months and three strokes; and Raja Rishi was sentenced to 30 months and four strokes.
All five pleaded guilty to a charge of rioting at the Concorde Hotel and Shopping Mall in 2023, according to a report from Channel News.
Sridharan, 30, Manojkumar, 32, and Sashikumar, 34, were identified as members of a secret society group.
A sixth man, Asvain Pachan Pillai Sukumaran, 30, faces a murder charge in connection with the death of former bouncer Mohammad Isrrat Mohd Ismail, 29. His case is still pending.
Additionally, six other men aged between 25 and 33 are mentioned in court documents as co-defendants involved in the riot.
Isrrat and his acquaintance Muhammad Shahrulnizam Osman, 30, also former bouncers at Club Rumours, were linked to another secret society.
The incident occurred on August 19, 2023, when a group of around 10, including several accused, were drinking at Club Rumours. Isrrat and Shahrulnizam approached to deliver a wedding invitation to club staff while sitting near the entrance, opposite the accused.
As the club was closing around 6 am, a confrontation ensued, leading to Isrrat being stabbed multiple times.
Staff at Club Rumours called for an ambulance as Isrrat was bleeding heavily. Unfortunately, he was pronounced dead upon arrival at the hospital. (PTI)
