SINGAPORE, Feb 26: Five men of Indian origin have received jail sentences ranging from two to three years, along with caning, for their involvement in a riot that resulted in the death of a former bouncer at a hotel in Singapore.
Sridharan Elangovan was sentenced to 36 months in prison and six strokes of the cane; Manojkumar Velayanatham received 30 months and four strokes; Sashikumar Pakirsamy was given 24 months and two strokes; Puthenvilla Keith Peter received 26 months and three strokes; and Raja Rishi was sentenced to 30 months and four strokes.
All five men pleaded guilty to charges of rioting at Singapore’s Concorde Hotel and Shopping Mall in 2023, as reported by Channel News.
Sridharan, aged 30, Manojkumar, 32, and Sashikumar, 34, are identified as members of a secret society.
Another individual, Asvain Pachan Pillai Sukumaran, 30, was previously charged with murder for allegedly killing former bouncer Mohammad Isrrat Mohd Ismail, 29. His case is still pending.
Six other men, aged between 25 and 33, have also been named in court documents as co-accused in the riot.
Isrrat and his acquaintance Muhammad Shahrulnizam Osman, 30, both former bouncers at Club Rumours, were associated with a different secret society.
On August 19, 2023, a group of approximately ten individuals, including several accused, were drinking at Club Rumours located at the Concorde Hotel and Shopping Mall. At that time, Isrrat and Shahrulnizam approached to deliver a wedding invitation card to club staff and sat near the entrance, opposite the group of accused.
Around 6 a.m., as the club was closing, Isrrat and the accused engaged in a verbal altercation that escalated, leading to Isrrat being stabbed multiple times.
Staff from Club Rumours called for an ambulance when Isrrat started bleeding profusely; he was pronounced dead upon arrival at the hospital. (Agencies)
