SRINAGAR, December 29: Flight operations at the Srinagar International Airport were disrupted for the second consecutive day due to dense fog and reduced visibility, as reported by officials.
In contrast, train services and traffic on the Srinagar-Jammu National Highway resumed today after heavy snowfall had isolated the Kashmir Valley from the rest of the country on Saturday.
Director of Srinagar International Airport, Javed Anjum, told UNI, “The dense fog has severely limited visibility, causing several incoming flights to be diverted, with only one flight from Delhi successfully landing this morning.” He expressed optimism that visibility would improve, allowing regular flight operations to resume later in the day.
On Saturday, heavy snowfall resulted in the cancellation of 80 percent of flights at the airport.
Additionally, rail services that were halted on Saturday due to snowfall in the region restarted today, according to a railway official. “Trains will operate at reduced speeds amidst snow accumulation and may experience delays,” he noted.
Meanwhile, traffic flow on the vital Srinagar-Jammu National Highway resumed after a two-day suspension due to winter weather conditions. A traffic police official confirmed, “Passenger vehicles are now traveling both ways on the highway.” He also advised commuters to adhere to lane discipline, as roads between Banihal and Qazigund remain slippery due to snow.
Other routes, including Mughal Road connecting Shopian district in south Kashmir to the Rajouri and Poonch districts of Jammu, Sinthan Road linking south Kashmir, Sonamarg-Kargil Road to Ladakh, and Bhaderwah-Chamba Road, are currently closed due to heavy snow accumulation.
