NEW DELHI, Dec 16: Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman remarked on Monday that India’s Constitution has endured remarkably over its 75 years, contrasting it with the numerous countries that formulated their constitutions around the same period, many of which have since revised or altered theirs.

While opening the dialogue on the ‘Glorious Journey of 75 Years of the Constitution of India’ in the Rajya Sabha, she honored the 389 members of the Constituent Assembly, which included 15 women, who undertook the formidable task of drafting the Constitution for India in such a difficult setting.

According to Sitharaman, the Constitution of India “has stood the test of time.” She expressed, “Today, we take immense pride in the progress of India’s democracy.”

As the nation commemorates the 75th anniversary of its Constitution, she emphasized, “It is essential to reaffirm our dedication to constructing India, which is Bharat, and upholding the essence embodied in this hallowed document.”

Sitharaman noted that India and its Constitution belong to a distinct category of their own. She pointed out that after the Second World War, over 50 nations gained independence and drafted their constitutions.

“However, many of these nations have not just amended their constitutions but have completely modified fundamental aspects of them. In contrast, our Constitution has stood resilient, although it has undergone numerous amendments, which were essential at various junctures,” she stated.

The Rajya Sabha is set to engage in discussions on this matter on Monday and Tuesday.

Chairman Jagdeep Dhankhar announced that time constraints would not restrict the debate, and all speakers wishing to contribute would be given the opportunity by extending the discussion period. (PTI)
