JAMMU, Feb 7: A group of public officials from Kargil and Leh, spearheaded by Jamyang Tsering Namgyal, the former MP of Ladakh, convened with Lt Gen Raghu Srinivasan, the Director General (DG) of the Border Roads Organization (BRO), at Seema Sadak Bhawan in New Delhi to deliberate on the pressing road and infrastructure requirements in Ladakh.
The team, which included Councillor Aga Syed Ali Almusavi (LAHDC Kargil), ex-councillor Tsering Paldan (LAHDC Leh), and Nawang Dorjay Lungdo (representative for Tharuk villagers), underscored the critical nature of outstanding projects vital for both civilian and military transportation.
Jamyang Tsering Namgyal and Tsering Paldan voiced their worries regarding the 30 km Upshi-Gya segment on the Leh-Manali Highway, advocating for the prompt allocation of funds for its repair due to its deteriorating status endangering civilians, tourists, and military personnel. Despite repeated requests over the past four years, the initiative has yet to commence, prompting the representatives to call for swift action on approvals and funding.
An additional significant request was for the establishment of a strategic tunnel from Farona (Lasar La) to Drass, advocated jointly by Aga Syed Ali Almusavi and Jamyang Tsering Namgyal. This proposed tunnel is intended to enhance national security by enabling quick troop movement, ensuring year-round connectivity by reducing travel time by one hour, increasing hydroelectric output by an extra 8 MW for the Chutuk Hydroelectric Project, and promoting regional economic development.
Moreover, the team called for the expedited construction of the Kela Tunnel at Changla, highlighting its necessity for year-round access to critical locations. Namgyang also urged for the surfacing of the Nimoo-Padum Road, the construction of the Shinkun La Tunnel, the development of the Korzok-Spiti Road, and the resolution of issues regarding civilian labor in BRO undertakings.
Following an in-depth dialogue, Lt Gen Raghu Srinivasan assured the delegation that their issues would be prioritized with immediate actions to fast-track approvals, funding, and the implementation of these essential projects.
