NEW DELHI, Dec 21: Madan B Lokur, a former Supreme Court judge, has been appointed chairperson of the United Nations Internal Justice Council. His term will run until November 12, 2028.

In a message to Justice Lokur, UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres announced the appointment, stating that the retired judge would lead the council, which includes other esteemed jurists. The message, dated December 19, reads: “I am pleased to appoint you, effective immediately, as a member of the Internal Justice Council, in the role of chairperson, for a term concluding on November 12, 2028.”
The council members listed in alphabetical order are: Ms. Carmen Artigas (Uruguay), a distinguished external jurist nominated by staff; Ms. Rosalie Balkin (Australia), a distinguished external jurist nominated by management; Mr. Stefan Brezina (Austria), a staff representative; and Mr. Jay Pozenel (USA), a management representative.
Justice Lokur, born in 1953, began his tenure as a Supreme Court judge on June 4, 2012, and retired on December 30, 2018, upon reaching the mandatory retirement age.
In 2019, he took on the role of a non-resident judge in the Supreme Court of Fiji, making history as the first Indian judge to serve in the Supreme Court of another country. (Agencies)
