PESHAWAR, Feb 18:
In a recent attack in Pakistan’s violence-stricken Kurram district, four paramilitary personnel lost their lives and five others sustained injuries when unknown militants targeted their squad. This incident coincided with an assault on an aid convoy in the area.
According to security officials, the ambush occurred late Monday in the Ochit area of Lower Kurram, following an earlier attack on an aid convoy transporting essential supplies.
The injured, along with the deceased, were transported to a hospital, where the condition of one of the wounded is reported to be critical. The military has not yet released an official statement regarding the incident.
The earlier attack on the aid convoy, which was affected by ongoing sectarian violence in Kurram district in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province, resulted in the death of a truck driver and injuries to 15 others. Tragically, another injured individual later succumbed to their wounds, raising the death toll to two, according to officials.
The convoy, consisting of 64 vehicles, faced attacks at multiple points along its route from Thall to Kurram, leading officials to redirect it back to Hangu as a precaution.
This attack is part of a troubling trend of violent incidents in Kurram, a region rife with deep tribal and sectarian conflicts that have led to prolonged bloodshed and blockades over the years.
A wave of violence that began in November 2023 has seen at least 40 people killed when two police-escorted convoys were ambushed. Since then, ongoing clashes have resulted in the deaths of over 150 individuals.
A ceasefire agreement was established on January 4 between the conflicting Sunni and Shia tribes after sectarian clashes in the district claimed 133 lives between November 21 and December 2. (PTI)
